Food tourism has become a rapidly growing sector in tourism industry. Food, as a touristic attraction and entertainment factor, not only provides opportunities for destination marketing organizations to attract visitors but also strengthens the economic linkage between tourism and local agriculture. This study investigates the influence of business characteristics and entrepreneurs’ personal background factors, including demographics and start-up motivation(economic, independence, & achievement), on critical success factors among owner-managers of local restaurants in Jeju Island. The findings from the survey suggest that both the link between personal characteristics and start-up motivation, and success factors are strong. More specifically, the results show that the respondents’ age, gender, and educational levels completed have a positive relationship with economic motivation and success factors, such as personal competency, product competitiveness, and owner’s communication skill level. In addition, start-up motivation has a positive affect on the critical success factors. Some practical implications are also provided.
