이 논문의 목적은 피터 버거(Peter L. Berger)의 사회학을 보는 시각을 일목요연하게 개괄하고 분석하는 것이다. 이 논문에서 제시한 버거의 사회학적 관점은 대략 다음 세 가지로 요약된다. 첫째 버거가 보는 사회학은 문학과 본질적으로 같은 유다. 둘째, 사회학은 코미디와 같다. 마지막으로 버거에게 있어 사회학은 특정 도덕에 무관심해야 한다. 현대사회학을 선도했던 한 거장의 관점을 통해 현대사회학을 비판하고 향후의 사회학이 무엇을 지향해야할 지에 대한 함의를 제시하는 것 또한 이 논문에서 명시적으로 밝혀야만 할 부가적인 목적이다.
The aim of this paper is to outline Peter Berger’s view of sociology and illustrate its implication to contemporary sociology. This paper highlights three things Berger suggests regarding sociology’s essence and characteristic. Firstly, in Berger’s eyes, sociology is closely akin to literature. Secondly, sociology has a strong affinity with comedy. Lastly, sociology is amoral, i.e., it is utterly indifferent to morality of certain society. To that extent, doing sociology qua sociologist is a semblance of having dual citizenship. In the light of Berger’s view of sociology, this article attempts to criticize the mainstream sociology status quo and offer a guide where the future of sociology should be geared to.
