Body Image, Coach/Dancer Communications, Reasons for Participation in Dance, Thoughts about Food and Weight
This study investigated the use of aberrant weight control procedures and eating patterns among 382 dancers(Korean : 192, American : 190). An eating patterns survey(modified Eating Patterns of Athletes) was administered to dancers participating on a variety of team dance with a response rate of 95%. Dancers' perceptions of their weight was almost a mirrored image of their actual weight. Dancers reported that their coaches rarely spoke to them about weight control, in spite of several types of pathogenic weight control methods : Korean(28%) and American(34%) dancers indicated use if at least one pathogenic weight method. The overwhelming reason reported for their dance participation was to have fun(Korean : 71%, American : 54%). Body image and pathogenic weight control methods related to the finding discussed as an exigent problem for the dance community.
