인간은 개인의 다양한 특질인 자아를 기반으로 존재한다. 자아는 생애 주기별로 지속적인 자기확인의 과정을 거쳐 성숙의 단계를 거치는데 매슬로우(Maslow)인간 욕구의 마지막 단계가 ‘자아실현’임을 보듯이 인간은 궁극적으로 자아를 완성의 단계를 향해 다양한 경험의 과정을 거친다. 삶을 통한 다양한 경험은 감성 반응을 거쳐 구체적인 감정으로 표현되며 이의 반복 과정을 통해 자아가 형성되어 간다. 자아를 분석하고 자신을 표현하는 과정은 성장과정 뿐 아니라 성인 이후에도 필요하다. 자아의 표현은 예술을 포함한 다양한 영역에서 살펴 볼 수 있는데, 색채를 바탕으로 한 자아표현과정은 자신을 이해하고 의미를 찾는 중요한 경험이 될 수 있다. 본 연구에서 색채를 기반으로 경험하는 자아표현과정에서 자아와 감성색채의 연계성을 자아 이론을 기반으로 고찰하고 자아상징색채를 정의한다. 또한 청소년을 대상으로 한 실험을 바탕으로 자아상징색채의 어휘를 수집하여 특징을 분석하였다. 실험 대상은 에릭슨(Erickson)의 발달단계 이론에서 청소년기에 해당하는 5단계(12-18)에서 12-15세 학생을 대상으로 연구하였다. 본 연구를 통해 조사된 자아상징색채 형용사의 색채분류를 통해 분석한 결과 여러 색채에서 반복해서 나타나는 단어가 존재하여 개인의 감성과 선호색채가 자아상징색채와 연계된 다는 것을 볼 수 있었다. 색채를 기반으로 한 자아형성 프로그램을 위해서는 자아상징색채 형용사에 대한 새로운 모델을 개발할 필요가 있다. 자아를 상징하는 감성색채는 문화, 연령, 지역에 따라 차이가 있을 수 있으며 이러한 집단의 특성에 따라 활용할 수 있는 형용사 모델에 대한 후속 연구를 진행할 예정이다.
Life is continuous experiences of searching for self and establishing personal identity. A number of artists expressed their mentality, and identities in art works, moreover colors have been important tools for self expression. Color is what humans experience through visual organizations. Color perception is phenomenological consequence which affects an emotion. Moreover, color is a nonlinguistic communication channel that helps humans to express their emotional states. It could be practiced through activities using various color materials. In this study self symbolic colors are defined based on self theories and emotional colors. Experimental research for self symbolic colors shows that colors are related emotionally on self images. Some emotional expression words repeated in several colors and preferred colors were related on their self symbolic colors. Emotional colors that represents self images would have differences in cultures, ages, region, etc. Teenagers may have an opportunity to develop their identity, confidence, and self-esteem and they could deeply understand their inner potential through self symbolic colors program. For more searches self symbolic colors languages model will be studied. The result would be useful for color conceptual design of self images, art classes and career education.
