이 연구는 제20대 총선을 통한 국민의당의 출현이 호남 유권자들의 정당선호와 투표결정에 어떠한 변화를 가져왔으며, 제3정당으로서 국민의당이 성공할 수 있었던 원인을 탐색하고자 하였다. 한국정치학회의 선거후여론조사자료를 분석한 결과 호남에서 국민의당이 거의 모든 지역구 의석을 차지하였지만 호남거주 유권자들의 더불어민주당과 국민의당에 대한 친근감이나 선호도 사이에는 별다른 차이가 없었으며, 호남출신 유권자들은 오히려 국민의당보다 더불어민주당에게 더 우호적이었던 것으로 나타났다. 아울러 국민의당에 대한 선호와 투표가 신당창당의 필요성보다는 문재인에 대한 거부감과 지역경제발전해결에 대한 기대감 등 때문인 것으로 나타났다. 이는 호남에서 국민의당에 대한 지지가 외재적이며 더불어민주당에 대한 불만을 표출하기 위한 항의투표일 가능성을 시사해 주는 것이다.
This study is an attempt to examine the changes in party preferences and voting decision, and explores what rendered the landslide victory of the People’s Party (PP) in the 2016 legislative election of Honam. Analyzing the post-election survey of the Korean Political Science Association, it shows that, first, voters feel almost the same closeness and preference for the Democratic Party as for the PP, although the PP won the most seats of Honam. In addition, Honam-born voters are more favorable to the Democratic Party than the PP. It also shows that the PP could gain electoral support due to the negative attitude toward Moon Jae-In and the potential of the PP for the regional economic development. It concludes that the electoral support for the PP is extrinsic and originated from the protest voting based on the public dissatisfaction with the Democratic Party.
