The purpose of this study was to explore the exercise experiences of older adults utilizing outdoor public fitness facilities, including Sansjang (mountain-based fitness areas), Gongsjang (park-based fitness areas), and Nolsjang (playground-based fitness areas), through a qualitative case study approach. A total of 27 older adults aged 65 years or older who regularly used these facilities were recruited as research participants. Data collection involved semi-structured in-depth interviews and non-participant observations. The findings revealed that Sansjang offered emotional stability and psychological restoration through interaction with natural environments. Gongsjang, characterized by its accessibility, served as a convenient venue for regular physical activity. Meanwhile, Nolsjang emerged as a multifunctional space fostering both physical exercise and social interaction, enhancing social cohesion among older adults and facilitating the development of psychological support networks. These exercise experiences reflected the distinct environmental features of each facility and demonstrated a positive impact on promoting the physical and mental well-being of older adults while strengthening their social connections. This study highlights the critical role of outdoor public fitness facilities in supporting the health and social integration of older populations. It underscores the necessity for policy interventions and sustained research to leverage the potential of these facilities. By establishing outdoor public fitness facilities as vital resources for senior health, welfare, and community cohesion, this study provides actionable insights for creating environments that facilitate healthy and active aging in contemporary society.
