이 연구는 이성봉이 저술한 『명심도강화』(1956)가 윌리암 베어드(William Baird)에 의해 한국어로 번역되었던 『명심도』(1912)를 보존하고 계승하는 데 기여하였고, 그것을 성결교회의 사중복음(四重福音)의용어들을 통해서 풀어내려는 시도를 하였으며, 자신의 부흥설교의 핵심사상인 회개와 주 예수께 복종함 또는 중생 및 성결의 사상과 깊은관련을 가지고 있음을 보여준다. 이성봉 목사는 1930년대 후반부터1960년도 초까지 성결교회뿐만 아니라 전체 한국교회의 지도적인 부흥사로 활동하였으며, 그가 저술한 3대 강화(講話) 중 하나인 『명심도강화』 는 특별히 그의 낮 집회에서 참석자들에게 많은 감화를 주었다. 『명심도』 라는 책은 중국어판인 『明心圖』로부터 번역되었는데, 이것은 또한 베를린선교회 소속인 한사백 (韓士伯)에 의해 독일어판으로부터 번역되었고, 이후 라인선교회 소속 중국 선교사 화지안(花之安)에 의해 1879년에정식으로 출판된 것이었다. 이러한 중국어판은 ‘序’와 ‘總論’ 등의 내용으로 볼 때, 중국의 유교전통을 존중하고 마음의 상태와 연결된 천국-지옥의 운명을 통해 하나님에 대한 공경에로 인도하는 특징을 보여준다. 중국어판의 저본으로서 1812년에 출판된 독일어판 『인간의 마음』(Das Herz des Menschen)은 가톨릭 신부인 요하네스 에반겔리스타 고스너(J. E. Gossner)의 작품이며, 그것의 기원은 프랑스 가톨릭교회의 예수회에서 유래한 ‘삽화 경건서적’으로 파악된다. 한편, 이성봉 목사는 1937년에성결교회의 전국부흥사로 임명을 받고 25년 이상을 부흥운동에 매진하였으며, 3권의 설교집, 3권의 강화집, 1권의 성가집, 그리고 1권의 자서전을 포함한 총 8권의 저서를 남겼다. 『명심도강화』는 1956년에 초판이출현하였는데, 마음의 중요성에 대한 그의 성서적 및 경험적 확신과, 『명심도』를 보존하고 강화(講話)를 하려는 열정에서 비롯되었다. 그가저술한 『명심도강화』는 이전의 판본들과는 달리 많은 찬양을 삽입하고내용을 새롭게 배열하였으며, 중요개념에 있어서 성결교회의 사중복음(四重福音)와 관련된 용어들을 사용하기도 하였다. 『명심도강화』의 요점인 회개와 주 예수께 복종함, 그의 다른 표현으로 중생과 성결은 바로그의 부흥회 메시지의 핵심사상에 속하였다. 세계교회사적인 차원에서볼 때, 이성봉 목사가 두 가지의 중요한 ‘삽화 경건서적’인 『명심도』와『천로역정』에 대하여 강화집을 출판하고 설교하였다는 것은 큰 의의가있다고 할 수 있다.

This study shows that the Myeongsimdo Kanghwa (the Lecture on the Heart of Man, 1956) written by Rev. Seong-Bong Lee contributed to preserve and develop the Myeongsimdo (the Heart of Man in Korean, 1912), which had been translated by the Rev. William Baird into Korean, interpreted it by the terms pertaining to the Fourfold Gospel of the Holiness Church, and was closely related to his Revivals’ central concepts of repentance and obedience to Christ the Lord or regeneration and holiness. Rev. Seong-Bong Lee worked as a leading Revivalist of the entire Korean Church as well as of the Holiness Church from the late 1930s to the 1960s and the Myeongsimdo Kanghwa (the Lecture on the Heart of Man), which was one of his three Kanghwas (Lectures), greatly influenced on his audience especially in the afternoon meetings in his Revivals. The Myeongsimdo in Korean version was translated from the Myeongsimdo in Chinese version that had been translated by August Hanspach of the Berlin Missionary Society from the German version and was published in 1879 by Ernst Faber of the Rhenish Missionary Society. The Chinese version shows the characteristics in its Preface 박형신, 이성봉 목사의 부흥설교 연구 211 and Introduction that it tends to respect for the Confucian humanistic tradition and intends to lead Chinese to the faith in God in notifying the destiny of the heaven and hell, which is related to the status of mind. Das Herz des Menschen, the German and base version of the Chinese translation published in 1812, was a work of the Catholic Priest Johannes Evangelista Gossner (1773-1858) and its origin traces back to the Jesuits’ devotional books with illustrations in France. By the way, the Rev. Seong-Bong Lee was appointed into a national Revivalist of the Korea Evangelical Holiness Church in 1937 to serve the goal of revivalism for more than 25 years and left eight volumes of his books including three sermons, three lectures, one hymn book, and one autobiography. The first edition of the Myeongsimdo Kanghwa was published in 1956 with his both biblical and experiential confidence in the importance of human mind and with aspiration to preserve the Myeongsimdo in Korean society and try to give lectures on the Myeongsimdo. Unlike the previous versions, his Myeongsimdo Kanghwa included many hymns, rearranged the contents, and used the terms from the Fourfold Gospel of the Holiness Church for the central thoughts. Repentance and obedience to Christ the Lord or regeneration and holiness, which were the most important parts in the Myeongsimdo Kanghwa, belonged to the core parts of his Revival messages. It is very meaningful that Rev. Seong-Bong Lee gave his lectures on the Myeongsimdo as well as on the Pilgrim’s Progress, which were the two most important devotional books with illustrations in the Christian history.
